Luis Fortuņo, Statehood Republican, Takes a Seat in Congress

On January 4, 2005, Luis Fortuņo was sworn in by House Speaker Dennis Hastert as Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner. In his first attempt at elected office, Fortuņo brings a wealth of Washington experience to the position and is well grounded in Puerto Rican public affairs.  A graduate of Georgetown University in Washington and the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville, Virginia, he has been practicing law in San Juan for 16 of the past 20 years.

After being involved in the first presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan, he returned to Puerto Rico and became active in New Progressive Party (PNP) politics, as well as with the local Republican Party.  He currently holds the position of Republican Committeeman from Puerto Rico.  He served under the Pedro Rossello administration as Director of Tourism, and later as Secretary of Economic Development and Commerce.

Fortuņo has been assigned to three Committees in the House of Representatives: Education and the Workforce; Resources; and Transportation and Infrastructure.
