Young Democrats of America Call for Representative Democracy for Puerto Rico 2007 Dallas Convention Enshrines 2006 Non-Territorial Position in Young Democrats platform -Statehooder Domenech elected YDA National Committeeman July 27, 2007
The Young Democrats of America (YDA) have enshrined their position urging an end to Puerto Rico's current unrepresentative territorial status at their annual convention in Dallas. First adopted in 2006 the Young Democrats included language pressing for a "fair and federally sanctioned process" of self-determination.
The final platform language is stronger than originally proposed and distinctly calls for congressional approval of a process for final self-determination. The platform language is included under " Under Government and Electoral Reform" and reads as follows.
"We stand for...
11. Providing the American Citizens of Puerto Rico with a fair and federally sanctioned process to determine their final, non-colonial and non-territorial political status, which will define their future relationship to the United States of America either as a state of the union or as an independent nation."
Founded in 1932, the Young Democrats of America (YDA) is the largest youth-led, national, partisan political organization and is also the official youth arm of the Democratic Party of the United States. It strives to mobilize young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process, influences the ideals of the Democratic Party, and develop the skills of the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local and national level. The YDA ’s political activities include increasing the voter turnout of young Democrats to affect the issues impacting their constituency and are particularly focused on political activism.
In addition on July 21, 2007 the Young Democrats elected pro-Puerto Rico Statehood Francisco Domenech as its Democratic National Committeeman. A Superdelegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, in December 2007, Mr. Domenech was appointed by Senator Hillary Clinton to Co-Chair her presidential campaign's Hillblazers, a national network of young professionals and students. In 2004 Mr. Domenech was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention, where he served as one of the whips for the Puerto Rico Delegation.
